One of the medications that are commonly used in MAT is buprenorphine. MAT for alcohol addiction is often done with medications like naltrexone, disulfiram, and acamprosate. Naltrexone blocks the effects of opioids and can also reduce cravings for alcohol. Disulfiram causes an unpleasant reaction when combined with alcohol and Acamprosate helps to relieve symptoms of alcohol withdrawal and reduce cravings.

The use of MAT is not limited to opioid and alcohol addiction only, MAT is also used to treat other types of substance abuse, such as benzodiazepine addiction and smoking cessation.
